Governor Newsom announces wildfire protection measures

The state is improving its research to address climate-related challenges. The Governor will ask the State Board of Forestry to implement "Zone 0" regulations, requiring a fire-resistant area within 5 feet of buildings in the highest fire risk zones. This aims to reduce fire risks in urban areas, similar to the Palisades and Eaton fires. Additionally, the Governor will instruct CAL FIRE to release updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, adding 1.4 million new acres to the higher fire risk categories, which will affect building and planning rules for these communities across the state.
