California is experiencing early and destructive wildfires this year, raising concerns about the potential for a devastating fire season ahead. Over 6,000 wildfires have burned nearly 1 million acres, with notable incidents like the Park Fire becoming the fourth-largest in state history and Line Fire, which was so massive it generated its own weather. It is unusual, these fires are occurring without the typical seasonal winds that intensify flames, indicating a significant shift in fire dynamics. This year's unusual plant growth, nearly double the norm due to previous wet winters, has dried out rapidly under record heat, creating a hazardous accumulation of fire fuel. Climate change is exacerbating this wet-to-hot pattern, resulting in a cycle of increased wildfire risk as abundant growth subsequently dries out and becomes highly flammable.

This is all very concerning to homeowners in southern California who now face the challenge of upgrading their outdoor structures before the new fire codes are put in place. CalFire is working on banning wooden fences and gates, plants, or anything flammable within 5 feet of homes to limit damage.
